Camp NaNoWriMo

So Camp NaNoWriMo has started today for the month of August and of course I decided to give it a try which meant I’ve spent the past few hours staring at Word while trying to figure out what happens. It’s more difficult this time around. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this but for NNWM of November 2010 when I started writing, I knew the beginning, middle, and end. Because I knew what would happen in the middle of the story, I was able to tell myself that I couldn’t reach the middle of the story until it was November 15th or so. This forced me to find other things to fill the gap in between so that I couldn’t go rushing through my story and hit the end so quickly. Then after hitting the middle of the story, I was forced to write in other things to fill in the second half before I reached the end of the story near the end of the month.

This time around, I know how the story starts. I know why it’s happening. I just don’t have a middle or an end. I don’t know how to pace the story so that I’m not speeding to the end and then end up with a quick story. All I can really do is what I did last time. Just feel around in the dark and let the story unfold. Maybe I’ll know what the middle is and how it ends and then pace myself then.

According to Word’s word count, I’ve written 856 words. This is going to hurt. A lot. Back to the storytelling…
