The Cottingley Fairies

“How did this particular book end up in your collection?”

Well, it all started many many years ago when two girls decided to cut out paper fairies and take pictures of them! Seriously though, to start at the beginning… SciFi (Now SyFy) aired a movie titled “FairyTale: A True Story”. The movie is based around two little girls, Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, who take pictures of themselves with fairies. The mother takes the pictures to someone who decides that the photos must be genuine.

Before you know it, they’re caught up in a whirlwind that involves Harry Houdini, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, etc… People are trespassing on property to see fairies for themselves. Meanwhile the girls claim the faeries are true and the movie does touch on real fairies so the girls are real apologetic and so they make an offering by building some nifty house for them.

When I mentioned this movie to a friend, she instantly recognized it right away. The Cottingley Fairies. I don’t know if she saw the movie but she knew about the fairies and how it was so exciting and fascinating that such a phenomenon was able to happen at that period in time. I decided to hit Google and there was all this information about it. At some point, someone pointed out, “Hey! These faeries look just like some faeries right out of Princess Mary’s Gift Book.”

What was fascinating is that even though the girls confessed that the photographs were fake, they disagree on the final photograph (They took a total of five photographs). The final one doesn’t include either one of them. Frances claimed that the last photograph is genuine, and that they had actually seen fairies.

Last of Five Pictures. Genuine?

My friend thought the whole thing was downright fascinating (I’ll admit I did too after being surprised that Houdini and Doyle were actually swept up in it too – and not just something tossed in the movie to make it more dramatic).

I figured the neatest Christmas present I could give to her was the book that inspired some of the fairies. I went on eBay, kept track of several lots, and managed to nab one. It was in such perfect condition and even had a very old newspaper clipping tucked inside. I wrapped it up and sent it to her for Christmas. I thought it was so neat to have an old book that I decided to look on eBay again and I managed to nab one for myself. Unfortunately my copy was beat up but everything was still there.

I think it may be a bit difficult to find any information on Princess Mary’s Gift Book though. I was hoping to find the history on the book itself at some point but it’s so steeped into the Cottingley Fairies hoax.

And NaNoWriMo 2010 comes to an end.

And so comes the last day of NaNoWriMo. My final wordcount is 56,011. It’s amazing to have met my daily 1,667 word goal and light up all the days of the little calendar with green boxes. I ended the story and I would say that it went okay.

I will say that halfway through the month, when I struggled with the idea of killing someone and doing a time lapse, I have to admit that while I’m only slightly annoyed by the time lapse (which was unfortunately needed to build a gap in time to have something else build up), I am really glad I stuck to my guns and had the character stay dead. I know in a fantasy world, there’s always a way to bring a person back from the dead but the character that died, I sort of felt like that his time came and went and everyone had to push on and etc etc etc…

I’m definitely not gonna bother editing this story until a few weeks down the road. That’s the one advice I will happily accept – where you set aside the book for a few weeks so that you can go back to it with fresh eyes and see what can be done better and if you made any mistakes story-wise. I know I’ve made quite a few along the way and jotted them down in a notepad as a reminder. Some characters appeared with certain intentions that just don’t make sense anymore and I gotta fix that too.

This was quite an unusual experience. I still laugh when I look back to before November started and I was seriously convinced that I’d last a day or two before calling it quits. I think maybe I’ll give it a try again next November to see if this wasn’t beginner’s luck! hehe.

50,000 words written…

Yay!!! I wrote more than 50,000 words! Big ol’ cheers! Woohoo!!! My profile now sports a purple bar that proudly says “Winner!”. Gotta love it!

Not done with the story yet. I still have to meet my daily 1,667 word goal for the next three days and I just hope I have enough story to stretch over the final days.

Yay! 😀  hehehe.

NNWM: Day 25

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it!

Still chugging along. My story almost came to an end very quickly but I thought of some extra scenes that would work nicely and add more so that I can try and give it a somewhat exciting end. I just hope I can stretch it out and meet the daily word goal all the way to the 30th. It feels like I’m right next to the end yet again and I have to force myself to throw more wrenches in. “Okay, and then that happens! And that happens! Toss that in!”

I’ve seen a couple videos on youtube about NaNoWriMo where there’s clips of people typing away. I can’t help but laugh because it’s not like that for me. I’ll write a sentence or two and then sit around and try to figure out what happens next. Stretch that over the next six hours and I finally meet the daily word goal of 1,667 words.

Not including today (since I haven’t written anything), I have 44,992 words. I’m really blown away. I never ever thought I’d make it this far. I still chuckle when I think back to before November started that I was so convinced I’d write for two or three days before calling it quits.

Halfway through NaNoWriMo

Written by: on Monday, November 15th, 2010

It’s halfway through the month. I never expected to make it this far. Excluding today, I have written 27,304 words thus far. I’m still working on today’s goal. I guess I didn’t mention it but what I do is that I start a fresh Word document every day just to make sure I’m reaching my 1,667 daily word goal. This also prevents my inner editor from leaping out and making me mess up any earlier work. If I recall something I forgot or desperately need to fix, I just drop a note into notepad and move on. This might save me at the end of the month if the NNWM site claims I have a lower word count (I hear horror stories about people ending up with thousands less from the site’s word counter than what Word told them.).

Just… wow, the fact that I even made it halfway through the month and the word count is pretty neat. I expected to quit a few days in but I just couldn’t so I kept going. It’s probably beginner’s luck. I think I’m halfway through my story. I think. I know some people had outlines, plots that they knew were going to happen and they’re able to pace themselves through the story as the days pass. I’m flying blind here. I know I’m not at the end of my story but that could change quickly if my characters react in ways I didn’t expect just yet.

My story has already drastically changed. I had characters that were supposed to go elsewhere and start something that would build up to a huge problem but instead they ended up trailing after other characters and different events happened. Before you know it, someone’s getting killed and I have a time lapse.

The time lapse worries me. When I used to role play a lot, I had this really bad habit of doing time lapses just to get to the next interesting scene. I’ve fought all my usual RP urges through this story. It seems I’ve reached a point where a time lapse is being called for. I don’t know whether to stick to the present and have something unfold or focus on a character and do a time lapse so that it’s disorienting to him when he comes back. I don’t know how a reader would perceive time lapses – if they’re annoying or whatever. I don’t know.

I can’t wait for the end of the month. To have the bare bones of a story that I hammered out is pretty neat. Still not looking forward to the idea of editing it though.

I hate naming stuff…

Honestly, I hate naming new characters, new locations, new everything. Any name I finally choose, chances are someone else has created it first, that it’s a surname, that it’s a word in a foreign language, or I make it too complicated that I know people will pronounce it several ways. I think naming locations has to be the worst.

I’ve been looking over name generators and trying to make my own variations but every time I pop it into google, it already exists in some form. I hate it when I find variations that I like but they have to be shot down.

Out of curiosity, how would you pronounce Gallennion?  Heh!

Day 7 of NaNoWriMo

A week of writing results at 12,898 words. I would keep trying for tonight but I have a couple shows coming on pretty soon (Boardwalk Empire & The Walking Dead) as well as two netflix movies to try to watch and get sent out by tomorrow (Prince of Persia & Splice).

Right now, I have two major fears. One is that I just completely idle out because I have no idea how to get to the next scene without making a huge mess. The other is that I complete the story way before I reach 50k words. I’m pretty sure that I’ll keep meeting the daily goal. I haven’t failed one yet – knock on wood. I already see a couple gaps and errors I’ve done so far and I keep fighting the urge to go back and correct stuff. This is all the first draft and I’m sure I’ll have *more* changes to do to the earlier stuff as I keep making my way through the draft. A friend swears that the editing is the ‘fun’ part. … ha.

Right now I’m trying to figure out how to weasel in a Brownie named Whiskerbush. I plucked that name right out of this ‘Cactus in Texas field guide’ right along with Chenille, the name of Tera’s fairy. Trying not to reveal any details but there you have it!

There are words in your document??

It’s annoying when it approaches 6 or 7 pm and you’re not even close to the 1,667 word limit. *strangles brain* That is all.

Day 4 of NaNoWriMo

Written by: on Thursday, November 4th, 2010

I’ve been looking through the forums of NNWM after I got stumped on how to write telepathy. The idea of using ” ” for telepathy would be a pain in my side because I’d have to keep stating that it’s being done mentally. I can’t stand italics and using italics would be a bit dangerous in case it got pasted into NotePad. I finally settled on using / / but I still posted in the Fantasy Forum just to see what others do. So far it seems like people say that it’s nothing special. Use what’s easy now and fix it later if it needs to be changed. I’ll have to see what the new replies are tomorrow!

I also saw an article about NaNoWriMo tools & survival kits that people use. I don’t get the fingerless glove thing (Gotta be a Northerner thing or something.) but besides the obvious – music – I do have one other thing that I use. A Dungeons & Dragons DVD! I know the movie is bad. I keep hearing that the movie was terrible. I know. The first time I saw this movie on HBO or Starz way back in 2001 or so, it felt like I was watching someone’s RPG and that got me in the mood to write. A friend bought the DVD for me just for NNWM. If I find myself watching tv more than I’m staring at Word, I switch over to the DVD and that makes me look at Word more.

It doesn’t stop me from banging my head on the desk and trying to figure out what happens next. It’s good though! Sometimes I think of something at the last second and it just connects to the next thing but it means tons more thinking to get to the next stepping stone. Phew. What’s exciting is when I create a new character that joins the cast without me meaning to.

I did meet and exceed my daily 1,667 words goal yesterday and today and that brings me to 7,728 words.

Day 2 of NaNoWriMo

Written by: on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

I don’t expect to blog every day about NaNoWriMo so… Heh!

I knew how the story was going to start so it was easy to get that pounded out yesterday. Today was a different story. I spent hours and hours and hours just trying to… really… get… words out. I kept getting up and going outside and doing random things before coming back to the computer to struggle with another paragraph. Once I got the paragraph down, I got up and did something else or surfed the net or… Oh man.

My word count for today: 1987 words. I met the 1667 daily word limit.

I decided that anything beyond 1667 is pure icing. Anything I write after 1667 words can not be used towards the next day’s limit – if that makes sense. I can’t just write 2000 words and then the next day, stop at 1300 words with the excuse that I wrote an extra 300+ words yesterday.

Icing is fattening. It’s like putting on fat for the winter when things get all covered with snow and little-to-no food can be found. It’ll tide me over. I need to make the extra effort if I can! Just in case I miss a day and I won’t suffer a huge setback.

Already I created new random characters and one character showed up that I didn’t expect. He’s not going to stay around long too long. I don’t think.

That brings my total word count to: 3976 *two thumbs up* Doing good so far!
