Day 1 of NaNoWriMo

To make sure you reach 50,000 words, you should write at least 1,667 words a day. I kept fiddling, going outside, walking around, but I finally sat down and over the course of a few hours typed 1,989 words. Woot!

Of course, I used Fantasy Gathering as my setting and decided to pursue a story idea where the creator is taken into his world. I’ve always loved the idea and thought it’d be neat to write something like that. I had to think of a lot of hurdles and limits to make sure it creates enough conflict to … write a novel.

Think! Like… What was the last thing I did? Did I fall down the stairs? Or worse, did I walk into traffic? I love this world. It’s my home away from home.” Thomas closed the book and frowned, “Am I lying in a hospital bed just dying? What if I died already and this is my version of Heaven? But where’s my relatives?”

A quick sample of what I wrote today. I really do hope I stick to it and keep going. I have the opener down… It’s the rest of the stuff I’m gonna have to really figure out.

Happy Halloween!

Happy, Happy Halloween, Halloween, Halloween. Happy, Happy Halloween. Silver Shamrock!

I remember the first time seeing this movie back in the 80’s. After Halloween 1 and 2, I was wondering what the point of this movie was since Michael Myers was nowhere to be mentioned. Seeing this movie on tv today, I finally took a peek at the wikipedia article for it (Halloween III: Season of the Witch). I guess they were trying to do it so that every Halloween movie had its own storyline. After the movie pretty much bombed, they went back to Michael Myers storyline.

One critic twenty years later suggests that if Halloween III was not part of the Halloween series, then it would simply be “a fairly nondescript eighties horror flick, no worse and no better than many others”

That I would have to agree with. I think if “Season of the Witch” was standalone, it wouldn’t have gotten that many negative reviews. It just got harsh backlash after following the first two Halloween movies.

Eh. Oh well. Happy Halloween! Check your candy very carefully. Bwahahahahaha!

Plotting, thinking, creating…

It’s hard to plot. I don’t like using online plot generators because the ideas they give are so far different than what I want to write. And the title! I still haven’t figured out the title. I might be lazy and just use Fantasy Gathering but it might be safer to name it “Fantasy Gathering Chronicles: *insert title of story*” or something. I don’t know.

Then I get a little embarrassed because I just know I’ll write for two or three days and quit.

But that hasn’t stopped me from trying to think of ideas. It’s weird how I’ll get used to the characters for a few days before a new idea comes up and a few new characters step in while a few characters bow out.  Instead of working with main characters, I end up working with secondary characters and and and…

Bleh. November needs to get here already so that I can quit flopping around like a fish out of water and try this stuff already.

Every time November comes rolling into the picture, a lot of excitement grows around NaNoWriMo. I always get a little curious about joining but then I tell myself that I’d write a chapter or two and lose interest. It’s also intimidating to read comments where people say that writing 50,000 words is pretty easy.

It also worries me that I’ve never been descriptive. I remember being in school and taking one-on-one tests where I had to describe each picture that was shown to me. It was always “The boy is eating ice cream. The girl is riding a bike. The dog is running down the street.” The person giving the test always encouraged me to give names and tell a story but I never deviated from my method and they noted it. It wasn’t until years later when I saw the results of one of those tests. “He doesn’t use names and he doesn’t give the characters a backstory.” That statement got stuck in the back of my mind especially since I like to write.

I think I’m also spoiled by the early internet years. The late 90’s was the chatroom era and that often required one-liners due to character limits. I guess I never could pull myself free from that habit, especially when we moved to forums and message boards. My friends know that I give a quick paragraph when I reply. That’s it. And somehow they can make six detailed paragraphs out of one brief moment where the only thing going on is a character looking at someone. I simply can not do that. I’ve tried…

Most people seem to give the same advice. Just write. The goal is to write 50,000 words so it’s basically a first draft. I think maybe if I focus on that, it might not be so terrible. So… I registered. My author’s page.

Not having a clue how to reinvent something…

I don’t know how I plan to be using this blog.

It’s pretty sad to look at my old site and watch as it becomes some relic from the old days when having a homepage was the most awesome thing in the world before social networking sites popped onto the scene. Now that most people have moved on to things that are faster and easier to use, it feels like the end of an era.

After talking to several people, the ultimate conclusion is that I’d have to make Fantasy Gathering work for me on a personal level. It used to be a site to cater to role players but now that they’ve moved on after our favorite places got all borked from changes, it has pretty much come down to me.

It’s hard. I don’t know what I can do. I sometimes feel like I should just let the site go but the fact that I can’t let go of the .com makes me feel like I have to revisit the site and … do something.

An idea occurred to me. With sites like facebook and twitter, the goal is to be fast and quick. I figure that since I’m always playing with little ideas in my head for scenes to torture my characters with, I could probably jot them down and post them here. That’ll have to do unless I can think of something else!
