Working on the book.

Around last Saturday, I decided that I had to finally confront the whole thing with CreateSpace. The codes they gave to NaNoWriMo 2010 winners expires at the end of June and after I read a couple threads on CreateSpace’s forums, I discovered that some people had their book rejected several times over because it wasn’t formatted right. So this lit a fire under me that I shouldn’t wait till the absolute last second to tackle it.

The whole week has been a headache. To minimize on the chance that Createspace may reject my book, I downloaded one of their templates for the book size. I popped in the text, put in title pages, dedication, copyright, split up the chapters on appropriate pages, proofread to make sure there weren’t any glaring errors etc. Then there was that whole page numbering disaster. Microsoft Works Word Processor is HORRIBLE. I tried OpenOffice but I wasn’t having much luck with that – but I did save it because I saw that it could export to PDF. I dug up my old Word 2000 and got it all banged out in there. I finally figured out how to make Chapter 1 start as page 1 and to make the earlier pages NOT have any numbers. That was annoying.

It was really neat to export it to PDF and then to look through it to make sure all the chapters were where they were supposed to be. Then I started playing on CreateSpace’s cover creator. So far I like what I’ve got. One part of me wants to find a completely new image but another part of me says that I’m not selling this book so it doesn’t matter what’s on the cover so I might as well use what CS is offering. My wizards do not use wands so I tried to get most of the wand ‘hidden’ by having it placed on the back.

I hate to admit it but… I think I have another idea bubbling up about what to write for this year’s NNWM. It was an idea I had for last year’s NNWM before this story won out. Now this other idea is back with a vengeance.

How do you decide who to be friends with?

(Question from The Daily Post)
Easy. They have to do whatever I say.

Actually I chalk it up to ‘pure dumb luck’. When you meet people, there’s always that ‘first impression’ where you can’t help but think, “Oh, she seems friendly. He seems nice.” Then as time passes and you meet each other again and again, either through gatherings or visiting a public place, etc… It just develops.

Then inevitably you’ll find yourself having a deep conversation with them at some point. You’ll find out what makes them tick and that often helps you decide that they’d make a good friend to have or if you should avoid them in case they talk about anything that you just don’t agree with.

I’ve met some pretty opinionated people and I never seem to stick around them. It’s just too much for me if I have to keep listening to why they’re always right and why my views and interests are wrong, wrong, wrong. It doesn’t end there because they tend to keep talking and sending stuff to ‘convert’ you.

But it doesn’t help that I’m shy. I never really know what to say so the moment tends to pass… hehe. What helps is the setting. If you’re always crossing paths, you’ll get to know each other better in the end and a good friendship will form if you click together.

Bonus: What defines the difference between a good friendship vs a close one?
Length of time? I guess that’s not entirely true. I’ve reconnected with some friends I knew from school but with how much time has passed, it’s more of a “I knew that person!” rather than “My good close friend.”

A good friend will mail you a pressed penny from a location near them while a close friend will be sitting next to you in jail saying, “I guess we shouldn’t have stolen that penny machine for fun.”

If you started a music band, what would the name be?

It would be Dragonbrisk. Yeah, that’d be it. Not sure how to expand on that… Maybe dance/electronica.

To give this post some more content, gonna include this pretty neat video involving bits from “A Little Princess”:

If you got a tattoo, what would it be?

After talking to a friend about writing, he suggested that I look at The Daily Post. At first I didn’t want to because I was sure the site would go into all kinds of topics but then my complaints were shoved aside and he said, “You’ll be writing. So do it.” Uh huh… Even though we’re well into May, I guess it never hurts to give it a try.

So today’s topic is: If you got a tattoo, what would it be?

I remember being told a long time ago that if you wanted a tattoo, keep it in mind for a year. If you still want it a year down the road, it’s probably okay to go get it. I’ve always wanted a blue dragon sleeping on top of a gemini glyph. A white tiger would be sitting on the lower edge of the glyph staring up at the blue dragon.

Problem is, I am incredibly overwhelmingly truly picky when it comes to dragons and tigers. I have never liked any of the designs for dragons and tigers used in tattoos. Ah, but, I’d never get a tattoo either. Fun to think about though…

300 Words Per Day

I probably should have written about this on the 1st but I wasn’t sure I’d follow through on it. I felt like I was starting to stagnate in the writing department and I figured that since May is six months down the road after NaNoWriMo, I could always try something more fun. So on the first of May, I decided that I should write 300 words or more per day. It wouldn’t be stressful and I could try to write some silly fun story just to give my imagination an exercise.

I haven’t missed a day yet. I also don’t limit myself to just 300. Just when I get stuck, I check word count and I always hit 350+ words. I shut Word down after because there’s no need to stress myself into thinking of what happens next on that day. hehe. I’ve been writing a fun story about Captain Leguile’s first mate going on some adventure in Eidolon. I haven’t thought far ahead at all and I’m just basically making stuff up as I go along.

I know it’s been forever since I updated but I guess my interests turned to other things such as my Plants & Such blog now that the weather has warmed up and everything is growing.

I also scanned in my collection of pressed pennies: Pressed Pennies It started by ‘accident’ and has been growing since!

I finished editing my NaNoWriMo story so that it flows smoothly from beginning to end. I know that in the grand scheme of things, it has to be edited to death but I’m not looking to be published. I do have to look into the code that NNWM gave out in order to get a free-proof copy. It’d be neat to have my story in book form. After I finished editing, I felt like I’ve been stagnating so I’ve decided that for May, I have to write 300 words per day. It’s quick, fun, and not stressful… I figure I’ll write some little story through the month and it’ll be a fun way to exercise my imagination.

Other than that, things are quiet around here. 😉

AWTours

I’ve been helping out at AWTours. It’s a world in ActiveWorlds with the goal of giving tours to some fantastic places in various worlds.

My job was to copy over a bunch of teleports and start converting them to another object type. It’s repetitive and mind-numbing, of course. hehe.  Once the thumbnails are all put in, I bet the whole shebang will look pretty neat.

There’s probably going to be tons more teleports coming in as well…

I didn’t expect to put much effort into playing my Earthguard Mystic in Perfect World but after talking to Melika and letting her know that I created a character and gave it a whirl, she logged in and then we were joined by a friend of her’s so we got a lot done.

Earthguard Meditation

I absolutely love the Devil Chihyu. He is incredibly helpful when attacking monsters. I also acquired Storm Mistress but haven’t done anything with her yet. And then I eventually got the kite to fly but it lasts for 3 days so… Gonna try to level up as much as I can.

Tree Resting

It was really odd. As I kept leveling up, the monsters were still complacent. They didn’t bother us or anything unless we made the first attack. I kept trying to remember if this was the same for when I chose to be a human wizard last year. I was pretty sure that as you leveled up, you had to deal with monsters attacking you when you got too close to them.

One thing that shocked me was that when we got around to level 20, we entered an area to do a quest but we were suddenly being attacked left and right. It was really intense and there were a lot of monsters in a small area. They were very aggressive and re-spawned fast! It just seems rather sudden to go from all complacent monsters to a mob that attacked you left and right when you’re too close to them all. It doesn’t seem to teach you to slowly ease in like I experienced with the human wizard character. For people who are playing for the first time, it might come as a shock to them when they’re used to monsters ignoring them and then suddenly being attacked by two or three monsters and fleeing only to run into more. hehe.

I’ve reached Archosaur so it’s back to all the boring quests I’ve done before.

Earthguard on Perfect World International

Melika told me recently that there was a new race added to Perfect World. I thought I’d check it out later. I had no idea that the game changed from “Rising Tide” to “Genesis” and all. What a big change! After waiting a couple hours for the update to download, I went in and quickly created a character. I probably should’ve taken the time to customize it but I just wanted to see what they were.

I haven’t played the game for a couple months but I may just tinker with this character some just to see what he’s capable of but I may not level him up all that much.

Riff might not be happy to hear this since he’s the one that convinced me to try Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited.

But… Wow! It is just terrible! Okay, Maybe I am rushing into my opinion of it but it is downright confusing. I have given the game three days and I still can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.

I chose Khyber. Upon entering the game, you create a character, find yourself on a beach because of a shipwreck. You meet a thief and then you go through a quick dungeon. After that, you appear in Korthos. I tried doing quests but I keep dying. My magic, or ‘spell points’ goes to zero FAST. I have no choice but to use my staff to conk the monsters on the head and I keep dying. A LOT. Nothing ever recovers and I have no idea why.

I know in the sample dungeon, they said something about healing at shrines but those shrines don’t exist at all on the quests I’ve tried in Korthos. How the heck am I suppose to throw spells if it goes to 0 pretty fast? I don’t know. It seems to me that this game highly favors guilds, like you need to be in a guild as soon as you enter the game in order to advance anywhere.

I suppose I’ll keep tinkering with the game in the meanwhile in case I figure something out.
